A LONG LIVED OBLIQUITY

Director : Azgad Abraham Crisostomo

Born in the city of Mexico to a Dominican political father and a bohemic mother from rural Mexico. Raised in New England from the age of 5 years old. Attended the university of Massachusetts in Amherst, and became a primary school teacher before a husband and father of three.

Film came into my life after leaving the theater from watching George Lucas’s The Return of the Jedi. I was hooked with the dream of making movies, and playing characters for the rest of my life. I can write a feature script as to why I didn’t pursue my film ambitions institutionally throughout the span of my time, but I can tell you, that I’ve never derailed from creating my film ideas into realities.

I just finished my first “real” film at the age of 45 from desperation. I’ve had this idea and made some connections with established film makers and constant artists, but at the last minute they withdrew, others went in half way and ultimately, after a year of developing my character in “A Long Lived Obliquity”, I became determined to finish what I finally started even if it would mean forcing my 15 year old and 20 year old help me film and act in this short.

I’ve been filming my life for decades, which ultimately, revisiting 120 hours of mini DV tapes, to find less than a minute of needed visuals and audio, gave our film the needed emphasis to magnify our truths. I’m proud of what we made, and believe it can speak volumes to a public struggling with themselves, and the challenges family and civil obedience demands of anyone looking for inner peace.

My childhood trauma could be boiled down to one thing: summer. Sure, long sunny days without school were something to be celebrated, but summer meant that my friends were away on vacations that my family couldn't afford. It meant my mom waiting until sunset to take us to the community pool, because she didn't want my skin to darken under the mighty, South Texas sun. She thought it was a shame that us girls were so dark and my brothers were so light. The pool was my happy place. I felt free playing mermaids with my sister, but wearing a swimsuit brought the attention of the neighborhood boys. As I braced myself to jump off the diving board, they would call out to me with harsh messages about my round stomach and thick thighs that chafed in the heat. Before I jumped into the water, I wondered how I could make my splash smaller. If I dove in straight like a needle, would the displaced water still wash over the pool's ledge? Under the surface of the water I dreamed of better summers. I fantasized about a pool of my own where I'd proudly wear a two-piece and play in the water until my skin tanned to a golden dark brown. I wrote Fancy Florez's Summer Staycation because Fancy is the girl my ten-year-old self needed so many summers ago. This short film is a story about a young, chubby, self-possessed Mexican girl who knows summer was made for healing and luxuriating, irrespective of her body type, and who will put in the hard work and stand her ground, to make her big dream come to life.
